Top tip for learning Czech

I’ve found a way of learning czech words which is really working well for me… what you do is break the word down into things that sound as close to english words as possible - then think up an image or story linking them together.

For example - Cave is jeskyne - (yes, keen). Katy & I went caving together in Wales, and got lost underground… still, I asked her if she was keen to go back & she said ‘yes, keen’.

Wind up AA battery recharger

To save me having to try to build one of these myself from scratch. Has anyone ever seen such a thing for sale?

How to tell a doer from a talker, & encouraging audience participation

I accept that I can achieve much more working with other people than alone.  There’s all the myers briggs stuff about teamwork and personalities, and I know exactly where I am on that - I desperately need some contrasting personalities on my team. It’s just ironic that I’m highly unlikely to find someone like that to work with bog on a promise because the personalities I need will be very risk adverse, and unlikely to commit unless they are sure that they can meet the commitment.   Read the rest of this entry »

Writing in stone

Yesterday evening I was at the Custard Factory - waiting for my husband to finish work (for the first meeting of Birmingham Social Climbers - and maybe the last), there was a typography conference on - which included a man who was showing people how to carve lettering into stone.  So of course I had a go.  An hour or so later I’d produced a rather ropey looking ‘b’ in slate. Man Flu

I, like those many victims of ‘man flu’, don’t suffer illness gladly.  I have struggled into work, no less, and kept myself distracted with admin. Answering the phone, though, is painful (achey neck!).  At least I’ve had a flask ginger tea & some high strength pain killers to keep me company. (Cold relief ginger tea: 1 cube of ready grated frozen ginger from Tesco, juice of two lemons and a tablespoon of honey in half a litre of boiling water).

Datemymate.net progress

I’ve been looking at online marketing strategies, and they seem to be almost exclusively versions of pyramid selling where one site gets a cut for directing a customer to any other site.  Surely there should be more to it than that?  Like having a good product, clear communications with customers and brand values that are reflected throughout the work of the organisation?  I’ve also been looking at the ‘competition’, though I use this word loosely as there is no other site doing what datemymate.net is up to. The USP is the secrecy - and aiming only at matchmakers. I wonder if it would help if people knew that the profits were going to support an environmental project? Read the rest of this entry »

Next steps

So, my temp time is nearly up.

I have some leads for bog progress - there’s an organisation called Pera which looks interesting http://www.pera.com so I need to get in contact with them.

Also, I need to arrange to meet up with Eco3 to continue with the training I’m accessing with them.

Datemymate.net is up and running - I need to formulate a marketing plan when I have a spare moment.  I’m considering continuing my CIM prof post grad diploma… not sure yet as I have no idea what paid work I’ll secure between now and Christmas, and there are lots of other things on the horizon.  How much do I really need a marketing qualification?

I’ve never seen this before - but I’ve spotted two people jogging to work this week.  That’s really is amazing.  It’s probably safer than cycling - and many offices now have shower facilities.  Maybe I’ll give it a go. Anyway, well done to them.

Eco friendly Christmas presents

Well, if you’re going to be making your own christmas presents this year, it’s time to get your skates on.

I was also thinking it’d be useful to have a list of sustainable Christmas presents, so please feel free to contribute your ideas:

  1. A shower head which mixes fine jets of bubbles in with the water & significantly decreases the amount of water necessary for a good shower.
  2. Rechargable batteries on a usb connector
  3. Onya bag (made of parachute silk and tucked into a key fob so literally always onya
  4. Shitake mushroom growing kit
  5. Wind up remote control

New Scientist

It was my husband’s birthday recently, and my main present for him was a subscription to New Scientist. Recently, I’ve been careful to spend time with him, he’s incredibly important to me and will support me in what I want to achieve with my life.
On Saturday we went to visit a friend in Melton Mowbray, and this involved a compulsory visit to the pub to watch the England game. Or rather, he watched the England game & I, rather self consciously, had the lap top out, working on an application for a research doctorate. Obviously, the only reason to do this is to further the cause of bog, or in other words, to make sure that I can have the most positive personal impact on combatting climate change. I filled out all the easy bits, but I’m not sure how to phrase the project. Read the rest of this entry »

Blue sky saturday

Saturday morning. The last two and a half weeks have been very, very busy. As well as working in an office full time I’ve also been spending time with my husband, going to singing workshops & Czech class has begun for the second year. We’ve also been away for weekends to the sea side with our flat mates (and swum in the sea!), visited my parents and gone out for my husband’s birthday. We have been home hardly at all, so the house is showing it. We also have a new flatmate who moved in on Monday, but I’ve seen little of him because we’ve been out so much.

I have had a block with the eco project - around the process instrumentation diagram, but have made progress with datemymate.net. Read the rest of this entry »
